Driver flees from Carthage Christmas crash

A driver fled on foot after crashing a Dodge truck into a tree on Wednesday afternoon near Carthage.

The single-vehicle accident occurred shortly before 4 p.m. on Summer Hill Church Road, east of Collins Road. According to officials, the truck was traveling west when it veered off the right side of the road and struck a tree head-on.

Firefighters arrived to find the truck’s engine smoking and doused it with water to prevent a fire.

A witness reported seeing the driver attempt to drive away but was unable to move the vehicle. The male driver then left on foot, heading toward a nearby residence. Shortly afterward, Moore County Sheriff’s deputies located the driver, who refused transport to the hospital despite minor injuries. He was escorted back to the scene.

North Carolina Strate Highway Patrol is investigating the crash and stated the driver will face several citations, including fleeing the scene of an accident.

One lane of Summer Hill Church Road was closed while emergency crews worked the scene.

Responding agencies included the Carthage Fire Department, Moore County Sheriff’s Office, Moore County EMS, and N.C. Highway Patrol.
