Fire crews battled a large fire at Sandhills Theater Arts Renaissance School Tuesday night. Firefighters arrived on scene just before 11 p.m. at the school located on Southern Dunes Drive off of U.S. 1 in Vass.
The fire lit up the night’s sky when two storage buildings and a tractor caught on fire behind the school. The fire spread to a fence connected to the school, and crews worked to keep the flames from reaching the main building.

“Several large windows were broken out by the heat, but fortunately, even though the school was filled with smoke, the fire didn’t extend into the classrooms or auditorium,” said Frank Staples of Cypress Pointe Fire and Rescue Department.
The school is closed for students Wednesday, Thursday, and is closed Friday due to a scheduled teacher’s work day.
Officials are determining the cause of the fire.
Responding to the scene were Cypress Pointe Fire and Rescue, Southern Pines Fire and Rescue, Whispering Pines Fire and Rescue, the Moore County Sheriff’s Office, Moore County EMS, and the Moore County Fire Marshal.
