Fire destroys vacant Cameron home

An early Wednesday morning fire began in the front room of a vacant home in rural Cameron off old U.S. Highway 1 next door to White Rock Nursery, and although firefighters arrived within four and a half minutes of receiving the call, the home was destroyed.

Cypress Pointe Fire and Rescue in Vass received the 911 dispatch at 4:25 a.m., and 10 trucks and 27 firefighters worked 30 minutes to extinguish the flames.

Cypress Pointe Fire Chief Mike Cameron said it was a heavy fire, and they worked several hours on hot spots. The fire’s origin was not suspicious.

The homeowner said his son, who passed five years ago, had lived in the home.

“My dog lived there, and we don’t know what happened. He’s OK and came home,” said the homeowner, who lives on the property.
