A large barn was destroyed by fire early Monday along Niagara Carthage Road in Whispering Pines, with firefighters working in below-freezing temperatures to keep the blaze from spreading to nearby buildings and wooded areas.
According to the Whispering Pines Fire Department, the call came in shortly after 1 a.m., and arriving units found a large barn well involved in fire. The flames were in danger of spreading outward and threatening nearby structures.
The first arriving firefighters initiated a fire attack while a water supply from a nearby hydrant was quickly established. Once the water supply was established, firefighters deployed multiple hose lines to contain the fire and prevent any damage to the nearby buildings or adjoining properties.
There were no animals in the barn.
“The extreme cold weather, 18 degrees with a wind chill of 3 degrees, was an additional challenge, requiring firefighters to keep water moving to prevent hoses and fire pumps from freezing,” explains Richard M. Lambdin, Whispering Pines fire chief. “The Department of Transportation was requested to bring sand and salt to the scene to treat the road, which became hazardous due to icy conditions.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Moore County Fire Marshal.
Additional units included Carthage Fire and Rescue, Southern Pines Fire and Rescue, Cypress Pointe Fire and Rescue, Eastwood Fire Department, Moore County EMS, Moore County Fire Marshal, and the Moore County Sheriff’s Office.
