Handel's Homemade Ice Cream opens in January in SP

A new ice cream shop opened in Southern Pines.

Handel’s makes fresh ice cream at its store, located at 1784 Old Morganton Road in the Lowes Shopping Center.

New franchisees Dr. James Flanagan and his wife, Denise, lead the new Southern Pines location, along with their three children, Shannon, Sarah, and Matthew, who are all part owners of the store.

“Handel’s has been a part of every trip home to visit family and has become a tradition. Even when we are in Columbus for Ohio State games, we always find a local Handel’s,” said Dr. Flanagan, co-owner of Handel’s. “I have been considering opening a Handel’s for the past 20 years, and now is the perfect time. Southern Pines is a rapidly growing area where the brand will thrive.”

The shop features 48 flavors in cones and dishes. It also offers sundaes, hurricanes, shakes, handle pops, and more. It will also offer pup cups for dogs.

“In the summer heat of 1945, Alice Handel created the sweetest of legacies in Youngstown, Ohio,” says the company on its website. “Using fresh fruit from her backyard garden and her own personal recipes, Alice lovingly made ice cream that quickly became a neighborhood favorite. Handel’s, and a commitment to quality, was born. To this day, Handel’s upholds the traditions Alice started all those years ago. From making each batch fresh daily to using her original methods and recipes, we’re still sharing our homemade ice cream and serving the communities we love so much one scoop at a time.”
