A two-vehicle collision in Carthage Thursday afternoon sent five people to the hospital and shut down a portion of Union Church Road for over an hour.
The head-on crash happened on Union Church Road at the intersection with Stage Road around 4:15 p.m. According to officials on scene, a Nissan pickup traveling east on Union Church Road crossed the centerline after the driver lost control. The Nissan then collided with a Chevrolet truck traveling westbound into Carthage.
The impact sent the Nissan off the roadway, causing it to roll over and come to a stop on its passenger side several yards away. The Chevrolet truck came to a stop in the middle of the roadway.

Both vehicles were heavily damaged in the crash, with debris scattered across the entire front yard of the residence where the vehicles collided.
All three occupants of the Nissan and both occupants of the Chevrolet were injured in the crash and were transported to Moore Regional Hospital for treatment.
Union Church Road was shut down between Stage Road and Priest Hill Road while crews worked on the scene and the vehicles could be removed.
Due to a significant fuel leak from the Chevrolet truck, the North Carolina Department of Transportation responded with a load of sand to cover the roadway for cleanup.
The Carthage Police Department was on scene investigating the crash.
Responding units were the Carthage Fire Department, the Carthage Police Department, Moore County EMS, and the Moore County Sheriff’s Office.
