Man injured after crashing into woods near Vass

A driver was transported to the hospital after an early morning crash left his car on its side at the edge of the woods off a major highway.

The single-vehicle crash involving a Dodge Challenger happened just after 3 a.m. Saturday on the northbound side of U.S. Highway 1 between Vass and Cameron.

According to officials on scene, a passerby reported the crash after seeing a vehicle in the woods with its headlights on. When the first unit arrived, the male driver, who was the only occupant, had already freed himself from the vehicle and was lying in the grass beside the roadway.

After being checked at the scene, he was transported to Moore Regional Hospital for further evaluation.

Fresh tire tracks led up to the scene of the crash from the road, suggesting the driver may have fallen asleep. However, he exact cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Responding units were Cypress Pointe Fire Department, Moore County EMS, and Moore County Sheriff’s Office.
