Driver leaves rollover crash in Cameron

The driver of a pickup that overturned Saturday night in Cameron left the scene before first responders arrived, according to authorities.

Emergency crews were dispatched shortly before 7 p.m. to a crash notification on Byrd Road near Pearl Lane. Responders initially could not find the wreck, but after a brief search, they located a Toyota Tacoma on its roof in a field.

During a search of the truck and the surrounding area, no driver was located.

There were lengthy skid marks indicating the truck had been traveling southeast on Byrd Road towards Pats Road when the driver lost control. The truck left the roadway, hit a ditch, then flipped over a wire fence and came to rest on its roof. The truck was significantly damaged in the crash.

The Moore County Sheriff’s Office and North Carolina State Highway Patrol searched the area but were unable to locate a driver or any possible occupants.

The fire department used a thermal imager to search a nearby wooded area, but the results did not produce any indication of where the driver might have gone.

Byrd Road was briefly shut down while authorities searched the area. Highway Patrol was on scene and is investigating the crash.

Responding units included Cypress Pointe Fire Department, Moore County EMS, Moore County Sheriff’s Office, and N.C. Highway Patrol.
