New animation shows future N.C. 211 improvements

The future of N.C. 211 is coming into view as the N.C. Department of Transportation releases a new flyover animation showing planned improvements to the highway through Hoke County.

The video offers an aerial look at the roadway after construction is complete and gives drivers a preview of changes designed to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and address existing road design deficiencies.

The R-5709C project involves reconstructing more than 9 miles of N.C. 211, from north of Ashemont Road to West Palmer Street and Mockingbird Hill Road in Raeford.

Plans call for widening the highway into a four-lane divided roadway, with two lanes in each direction. The design also includes grass medians, reduced conflict intersections, and the closure of the railroad crossing at Turnpike Road.

The Moore County portion, where the speed limit is 45 mph, will feature 30-foot raised grass medians. In Hoke County, where the speed limit is 55 mph, the project includes 46-foot depressed grass medians.

Reduced conflict intersections are designed to limit the number of potential conflict points between vehicles, improving safety while helping traffic move more efficiently.

NCDOT said the project is intended to reduce traffic congestion and travel delays while correcting roadway design issues. Existing speed limits will remain unchanged.

The NCDOT has also asked drivers to be mindful while navigating construction zones. From 2019 to 2023, there were more than 32,000 crashes and 159 deaths in work zones across North Carolina, per the NCDOT. Speeding and distracted driving accounted for more than 50 percent of all work zone crashes in the state.

Construction is underway. The flyover animation provides a look at what motorists can expect once the improvements are complete.
