Algene “Jean” Hennings Phillips, age 86, of Vass, passed away on Saturday, December 30, 2023, at her home, with her daughter by her side.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, January 5, 2024 at 3:00 pm at Cox Memorial Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home.
Jean was born in Hoke County on November 20, 1937 to the late Thomas Hennings and Margaret McFayden Hennings. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her brother, Henry Hennings.
She Graduated Salutatorian from Vass-Lakeview High School in 1956, and went on to attend and graduate from Hardbarger Business College in Raleigh, NC. Jean became a secretary, first working in Burlington, NC at an Insurance Company, then at Research Triangle Plant “Hercules” from 1962 until 1972. She then became a realtor in Lexington, SC and later in Hartsville, TN. Once again returning to the Raleigh area in 1974 she began working at NC State College in the tobacco lab as a professional secretary to numerous doctors and working with the scheduling and graduation for students until she retired in 2003 after 29 years of service. Jean was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Magnolia Chapter. She loved traveling, and music. Her hobbies were knitting and crocheting. She loved visiting and talking with her family and friends. She will be greatly missed by all her family and friends.
She leaves behind one daughter, Tanya Renee Lewis of Vass; granddaughters, Jessica Osborn (Josh) of Reidsville, NC, Stacey Crane (Chris) of Huntersville, NC, great-grandchildren, Izzy Osborn, , Alexander Crane, Scarlet Crane, Adalee Osborn, Lynndee Osborn to which she was always known as Granny and she was so proud of.
