George Gabriel Hoffman of Southern Pines, NC joined his beloved wife Marilynn in heaven on May 7, 2024.
George was born in Delaware, Ohio on July 14, 1924 to George “Bun” Klee and Geneva Grace (Gabriel) Hoffman.
In March of 1943, as part of the United States Marine Corp 5th Marine Division, George was deployed to the South Pacific where he served until November of 1945. When he returned to his family’s restaurant, after his service in WWII, he met the love of his life, Marilynn. They were engaged the following spring and married a few months later on July 3, 1946. With the support of his wife and four children, George managed his family’s business, Bun’s Restaurant and Bakery in Delaware, Ohio until his retirement in 1990.
He and Marilynn then joined a handful of dear friends in West End, NC, where George began his second career as an antiques dealer. They hosted cocktail hours on their deck, golfed, and collected Lincoln memorabilia, baskets, cork screws, and NC pottery. They enjoyed 70 years of marriage until Marilynn passed away on March 17, 2017.
During his lifetime, George accrued an extensive list of accolades, hobbies and titles, a testament to his dedication to service and community. Those service roles include, but are not limited to, Founder, Elder & Moderator Delaware Grace Church, Ohio & National Republican Conventions Delegate, Citizen of the Year (Delaware, OH), Sigma Chi Fraternity Ohio Wesleyan, Commander and District Officer American Legion Post #115, and President Delaware Area Chamber of Commerce.
He was a chairman for Delaware County Election Board, Delaware Country Development Committee, Delaware Committee “Renaissance in Music” Ohio Wesleyan University, Election Board Delaware County, Congress Campaigns, and Delaware County Republican Executive Committee.
He was a board member for Delaware County Bank, Little Brown Jug Racing Committee, and Red Cross.
He was an active member of Ohio Restaurant Legislative Committee, Elks, Kiwanis, Ohio Committee to Select Military Academy Candidates 12th Congressional District, Moore County NC Arts Council, Moore County and Delaware County Historical Societies.
George was welcomed into heaven by his wife Marilynn Marcheta Jenkins, his daughter Kelly Anne Hoffman, his sister Elizabeth “Libby” Kuhn, his brother-in-law Dennis Kuhn and their son, Jeffrey Kuhn; and by his lifelong best friend Thomas “Tom” Burns Wilson.
He is survived by his son George Michael “Mike” Hoffman (Connie) of Delaware, OH; grandson George Christopher Hoffman (Jennifer), great-grandsons George William and Ethan Christopher Hoffman of Indiana, PA; granddaughter Kathryn “Kt” Partridge (Bryan), great-granddaughters Nora Jameson and Marley Cleo Partridge of Etna, NH; grandson Scott Michael Hoffman (Melissa) great-grandchildren Sydney Ann, Grayson Scott, and Owen Gabriel Hoffman of Delaware, OH; daughter Susan “Sooz” Jeanne Hoffman (Socorro Romo) of Albuquerque, NM; son Steven Nickey Hoffman of Las Vegas, NV, grandson Steven Nathaniel Hoffman (Nikki), great-granddaughter Gabriela “Ella” Elizabeth Hoffman; grandson Andrew Myles Hoffman and great grandson Santiago Cesar Hoffman all of Delaware, OH.
George will be interred at Seven Lakes Chapel in the Pines, West End, NC. A celebration of life for the family will be held at a future date. Memorial contributions can be made to First Health Hospice & Palliative Care, a charity of your choosing or a local organization such as Arts Council of Moore County (NC) or the Moore County (NC) Historical Society.
Our family is forever grateful to First Health Hospice, Penick Village staff, his aides at Aging Outreach Services: Angela, Ciara, Inez, Patricia, Tia, Tina, and most notably, Sooz, for taking such great care of George in his final years.
