Mary Kelly Delehaunty, 95, of Pinehurst, NC passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 14, 2019 at her residence.  

Mary was born September 6, 1923 in Pittsburgh, PA to the late Leo Bernard Kelly and Catherine Cavanaugh Kelly.  She grew up in there and attended Pennsylvania College for Women. 

She married Thomas Matthew Delehaunty in 1944.  After the war they lived in Rhode Island, Florida and New York before Cresskill, NJ where raising their family.  In addition to doing volunteer work in the parish and the community, Mary worked in the publishing and tea businesses and did substitute teaching. In 1976, she initiated an annual family reunion which continues to this day. She was devoted to family and her Irish heritage.

After putting their four children through college Mary and Tom traveled extensively with family and friends. They retired to Pinehurst in 1993 where they very much enjoyed golf and bridge. They were active parishioners of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church.  

In addition to her parents and husband, Mary is preceded by her daughter Margaret Guild; brother Leo B. Kelly, II; two sisters Helen Kelly Chirumbole and Kathleen Kelly, and her grandson Timothy Delehaunty.

She is survived by her sons James Delehaunty (Katherine) and Michael Delehaunty (Joyce), daughter Jean Chard (David) and son in law Thomas Guild; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews and a host of other extended family and friends.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, July 18, 2019 at 1:00PM at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 160 E. Vermont Avenue, Southern Pines, NC 28387.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations in Mary’s name be made to a charity of your choice.

The family would like to especially recognize Mary’s excellent caregivers for their kind and compassionate care at her home at Midland Country Club.
