Rita McDonough Gormly, 91, of Pinehurst, passed peacefully at the WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh on Monday, July 3rd.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, she was the daughter of the late Frank A. and Ann Smith McDonough.  After her high school graduation, Rita went on to attend Trinity College in Washington, D.C. before earning her Bachelors’ degree in Economics from Marymount College in Manhattan.  In 1956, she married Matthew E. Gormly, Jr.  His work would take the couple from Long Island, NY to New Orleans, Connecticut and Los Angeles.  After retirement in the late 1980’s Rita and Matt relocated to Bradenton, Florida before settling in Pinehurst in the early 2000’s.  Avid golfers, they became members of the Pinehurst Country Club and enjoyed many rounds with friends and family over the years.

Rita also enjoyed to travel, having gone around the world four times with Matt.  She was a very social and outgoing woman, a beautiful lady who led a glamorous life.

Rita was the loving wife of the late Matthew E. Gormly, Jr.  She was the mother of Joan Mills and Matthew Gormly, III.  She is also survived by her six grandchildren:  Victoria, Christopher, Virginia, Sarah, Matt and Charlie.  Rita is also survived by her seven great grandchildren: Liam, Caleb, Margaret, Genevieve, Eleanore, Merrill and Matt.

A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
