Vivian Cunningham, a trailblazing World War II veteran and beloved centenarian, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2025, at the age of 102. Born in 1923, Vivian led a life marked by service, resilience, and friendship.

A highlight of her life was her service in the Navy during World War II. In 1943, Vivian was one of the first women to enlist in the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) program. She rose to the rank of Yeoman First Class, contributing to the war effort with dedication and pride.  After the war, she attended Lake Forest College in Lake Forest, Illinois, where she met her husband. They settled there and raised four boys. Dedicated to a life of service to others, she worked in a senior living facility while raising her sons.

Her zest for life took her around the world on numerous international trips and cruises. Eventually, she moved to Florida to be near friends and family, where her remarkable gift for making connections continued to flourish.

When she needed more daily support, Vivian’s son moved her to Pinehurst. She quickly made it her home—playing golf, joining a bridge club, riding in Veteran’s Day parades, and reading books by the pool.  Her caregivers and elder sons were devoted to her care, but it was her own unwavering determination that truly kept her going.

Vivian is survived by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a host of extended family and friends who will cherish her memory. Her legacy of independence, perseverance, and kindness will continue to inspire future generations.

A celebration of her life will be held at the Boles Funeral Home, 35 Parker Ln, Pinehurst on Friday, May 30, 2025 at 2:30 pm.
