obituary Tony Bruce Grose Whispering Pines

Colonel Tony Bruce Grose, United States Army (R), 77, of Whispering Pines, NC passed away on Tuesday, May 12, 2020 at his home.

Tony was born on March 27, 1943 in Asheboro, NC to the late Philip W. Grose and Gladys Johnson Grose.  He graduated from Franklinville High School in 1961 and received a BS in Business Administration from Campbell University and an MBA from Babson College. Tony was a veteran of the Vietnam War who served in the United States Army for more than 26 years. He was a graduate of the Transportation Officer Candidate School (OCS), the Command and General Staff College (CGSC), and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces (ICAF.)   Military life brought great opportunity for Tony to see the world, including travel to Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, Hawaii, South Korea, Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong and numerous locations in the United States.

After his retirement from the military in 1993 in Columbia, SC, Tony worked for the Richland County School District II, Columbia, SC as the Manager of Transportation and Security.  He then relocated to Whispering Pines, NC where he became a member of the Country Club of Whispering Pines.  He found great joy playing golf and being an active member of Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church where he served as an usher. 

Tony is preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Sandra Carter Grose, his parents Philip W. Grose and Gladys Johnson Grose; brother, Jerry Grose and sister-in-law, Peggy Carter.

He is survived by his son, P. Kevin Grose of Waleska, GA; daughter, Lori Ann Oakes and husband Charles Jesse Oakes of Charleston, S.; brother-in-law, Donald Thomas Carter of Greensboro, NC; sister-in law, Lisa Carter Bray and husband Darryl of Pleasant Garden, NC; sister-in-law, Bobbie Grose of Burlington, NC; nieces, Lynn Grose and Emily Bray; nephews, Michael Carter and John Grose; grandson Elijah Joseph Oakes and granddaughter Callie Brooke Grose.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina, 195 Sandy Ave, Southern Pines, NC 28387.

A private family graveside service will be held on Monday, May 18, 2020 at Pinelawn Memorial Park.  A memorial service and celebration of Tony’s life will be held at Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church in Southern Pines, NC to be determined at a later date when it is safe for all to attend.
