Vivian Wilson Green, 95, of Aberdeen, died Saturday March 17, 2018 at St Joseph of the Pines in Southern Pines.
Mr. Green retired in 1985 as Industrial Relations Director, Gulistan Carpet, JP Stevens & Company, Inc., a position he had held for twenty years.
He was the youngest of nine children born to M. Oscar and Maud Hunsucker Green, and reared in Montgomery County.
During World War II, he contributed to the war effort by working at the North Carolina Shipbuilding Company, Wilmington, NC. Following the war, he joined Robbins Mills in Aberdeen, and remained at that location through various job assignments, as well as several company changes. In 1965 J P Stevens purchased the company and he was headquartered there until his retirement.
Active in Aberdeen First Baptist Church since 1951, he served as Deacon Chairman, Finance Committee Chairman, Trustees Chairman, Personnel Committee Chairman, Enlistment Committee Chairman, Sunday School Director, Brotherhood Director, Training Union Director and Vacation Bible School Director. He also served on the Pastor Search Committees, Association Executive Committees, and held various other church positions. He was awarded a Deacon Emeritus Certificate in 2002.
Also active in the work of the Sandhills Baptist Association, he served as Vice Moderator and Moderator, and chaired the Constitution Committee. He was honored along with others, by having the Year 2000 minutes of the Association dedicated to him.
He participated in local civic affairs including two terms on the Aberdeen Town Council, serving one term as Mayor Pro-tem.
He was honored in October 1980 by being named Moore County Citizen of the Week.
A Mason and member of Roman Eagle Lodge #550 in Aberdeen since 1956, he served as Master in 1962 and was treasurer for seven years. In 1994 he was honored by the lodge by being made a Life Member. He was also a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of The Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, Valley of Charlotte since 1959. He was a Shriner and a member of the Oasis Temple, Charlotte, since 1961. He was a Certified Lecturer for the Grand Lodge of North Carolina and served a three year term as District Deputy Grand Lecturer of the Thirtieth Masonic District of North Carolina. He held Honorary Memberships in Laurinburg Lodge # 305, Raeford Lodge # 306, Southern Pines Lodge # 484, Hamlet Lodge # 532 and Elberta Lodge # 654. He received the Certified Lecturer’s Emeritus Certificate in August 2008.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Friday March 23 at Boles Funeral Home, Pinehurst. A funeral service will be held at 11 AM Saturday, March 24th at Aberdeen First Baptist Church with Rev. Michael Branscome and Rev. Charles Hinson officating. Interment will follow at Bethesda Cemetery.
Mr. Green was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Cornie Mae Kidd Green and a daughter Celeste Fields.
Surviving are three grandchildren Ashlie Sponenberg Liss (Danny) of Cambridge, MA, Lee Sponenberg of Wilmington, NC, Whitney Sponenberg Stover (Donathon) of Carthage, NC, one great grandson Kenyon Stover.
