One person was airlifted and four more were transported via ambulance after a head-on collision shut down a major highway in Moore County Saturday morning.
The crash happened around 11 a.m. on U.S. Highway 15-501, just north of Carthage between Muse Road and Medlin Lane.
According to officials on the scene, the crash happened when a Chevrolet Camaro traveling south toward Carthage crossed the center line, sideswiped a Chevrolet box truck, and then collided head-on with a Lexus passenger car. The impact caused the Camaro to spin around and come to a stop facing the opposite direction.
Both the Camaro and Lexus sustained heavy front-end damage.
Two men in the box truck, along with the drivers of both passenger vehicles, were transported to the hospital. A male passenger in the Camaro was airlifted from a landing zone established at the corner of U.S. 15-501 and Priest Hill Road. His condition is unknown at this time.Â
The N.C. Highway Patrol was on scene investigating the crash.
U.S. 15-501 was shut down for nearly three hours while emergency crews cleared the scene.
Responding units were the Carthage Fire Department, the Cypress Pointe Fire Department to assist with the landing zone, Moore County EMS, the Moore County Sheriff’s Department, and the N.C. Highway Patrol.
