One trapped, injured in Aberdeen collision

One person was injured when a car ran a red light in Aberdeen Monday night, according to officials. The collision occurred at the intersection of U.S. Highway 1 South and Highway 5, in front of the Marathon gas station.

Both cars sustained heavy damage, and firefighters had to use hydraulic tools on one vehicle as the driver was trapped in the car.

According to officials, a Hyundai Elantra slammed into the side of a Saturn L300 and crushed the driver’s door. The impact left a large debris field in the roadway and heavy damage to both vehicles, resulting in the southbound lanes of U.S. 1 being shut down.

According to authorities on the scene, the driver of the Saturn was transported by EMS to the hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening.

Aberdeen Police is investigating the cause of the accident.

Responding to the crash were Aberdeen Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS, North Carolina State Highway Patrol, and Aberdeen Police.
