O’Neal’s Kennedi Hamner signs with SVU for soccer

Senior Kennedi Hamner will continue her academic and athletic career next year at Southern Virginia University (SVU). She signed her letter of intent to play collegiate soccer at SVU during a ceremony at O’Neal’s Hannah Center Theater on March 23.

Hamner identified SVU as her top choice during a Fall 2025 tour, even before the opportunity to play collegiate soccer was on the table, making this next step both a personal and athletic milestone.

“This is actually pretty simple. Kennedi earned this moment,” said Kyle Kegl, varsity soccer coach for O’Neal. “Doesn’t matter what it is—soccer, basketball, volleyball, pickleball—if there’s a way to compete, she’s in. There aren’t many like her. No excuses, no shortcuts, just work. She built herself into one of the best defenders in 2A—honestly, I’d put her up against anyone in the state at any level.”

Earning all-conference honors for the last two years and known for her headers, long throw-ins, and confidence on penalty kicks, the defender has been a key presence in O’Neal’s back line. Hamner’s physicality, game awareness, and composure made her a consistent challenge for opponents and a dependable leader for her teammates.

“Kennedi has put in the work every single day,” said former O’Neal coach Jill Faxon. She embraced the idea of doing the little things right, even when no one was watching. Whether it was focusing on proper technique in the performance room or asking the right questions of coaches and teammates, Kennedi was always intentional in her growth.”

A team-focused player, Faxon added, “She encouraged her teammates, gave feedback during practices and games, and was always someone others could rely on for guidance and support. Simply put, she made the people around her better.”

“Kennedi is a young woman who embodies what it means to be a student athlete at O’Neal,” said Athletic Director Lance Stucky. “She leads first by example, and then with her voice. Whether in the classroom, the performance room, or on the field, Kennedi shows up with purpose.”

Hamner leaves The O’Neal School with a legacy of hard work, leadership, and competitive excellence that will continue to influence the program for years to come.
