In 2026, the United States will commemorate 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the founding of a nation built on the ideals of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. The Village of Pinehurst will mark this historic milestone with a yearlong series of events, exhibits and community projects, inviting residents and visitors to reflect on the nation’s past, present and future.
“America 250 offers a meaningful opportunity to reflect on our founding principles, how they have shaped our history, how they resonate today and how they will guide us forward,” said Village Manager Doug Willardson in a press release. “Through these events, we hope to encourage thoughtful engagement with our shared story.”
The Village’s America 250 observance will include signature events, public installations and opportunities for community participation throughout the year.
Signature events include:
Beyond the Liberty Tree
A ceremonial planting of a landmark Southern Live Oak and installation of a commemorative granite marker will take place Friday, Jan. 30, at 10 a.m. in Marshall Park.
Documentary Screening: “The American Constitution”
A public showing of the documentary will be held Wednesday, March 4, at 3 p.m. in Assembly Hall. The event commemorates the day the First U.S. Congress convened under the newly ratified Constitution in 1789.
Reading of the Declaration of Independence
A public reading will take place Wednesday, July 8, at noon in Assembly Hall. The event commemorates the first public reading of the Declaration in Philadelphia on July 8, 1776.
Community installations throughout 2026 will include:
*250 American flags displayed on the lawn of Village Hall
*250th anniversary banners installed throughout Downtown
In addition to these events, the Village is launching a community cookbook project titled “Stars, Stripes & Shared Traditions: A Pinehurst Recipe Collection Celebrating America’s 250 Years.” The cookbook will feature family recipes and stories submitted by residents, highlighting traditions that have been passed down through generations.
Recipe submissions will be accepted online through Feb. 13. The cookbook is expected to be released and available for purchase in April and May.
Traditional Fourth of July celebrations will also take place as part of the America 250 commemoration. Additional details will be announced closer to the event.
