The Village of Pinehurst Fire Department, in cooperation with Moore County Public Utilities (MCPU), will be conducting the annual fire hydrant testing and maintenance program starting in September.
This program is very important to allow the Village and MCPU to identify the quantity of water available for firefighting purposes; identify maintenance issues with fire hydrants, water valves, and other components of the water system; and it serves to rid the water distribution system of accumulations of sedimentation deposits.
Fire hydrant testing and maintenance includes capturing flow readings, flushing the fire hydrant and line, cleaning and painting, and documenting any inefficiency found. The maintenance program is performed by firefighters who are in contact with MCPU water quality staff during testing.
Citizens who experience any unusual water clarity problems after hydrants are flushed in their area are encouraged to turn on a cold-water faucet and let it run for 5 to 10 minutes. This will normally clear up the agitated water from the service line to the home. Sediment can accumulate in the lines, which can cause discoloration in the laundry. It is recommended to check that both the hot and cold laundry water is clear before washing. If water quality does not improve or further problems occur, contact MCPU by calling 947-6315.
Testing is expected to take place Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. and be completed by January 2024. Signs indicating that testing is being conducted in the area are put out in advance of starting each day.
Frequently asked questions:
Why is the water pressure low?
Your water pressure may be low due to the flushing of fire hydrants, which lowers the water pressure in the area that is being tested.
Is the water safe to drink?
Yes. If the water is discolored, let the water run until clear.
Why is my water discolored?
Due to the fire hydrant flushing, customers could experience a temporary discoloration of water, which is due to the unsettling of sediment in the water main.
What should I do about the discolored water?
Run the cold water for five to ten minutes – this should clear up the water.
When can I wash clothes?
Run the hot and cold laundry water until it runs clear. Then it should be safe to wash.
