Exceptional students from Moore graduate NCSSM

Moore County students were among almost 500 from all across North Carolina who graduated this year as members of the residential Class of 2025 of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics.

Students with high abilities in math and science began their studies at their local high school, then, as sophomores, applied to the nation’s No. 1 public high school (according to Niche.com), which serves all of North Carolina, announced N.C. School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM). Those accepted lived on the Durham and Morganton campuses in residence halls during their junior and senior years, taking high-level classes in not just science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, but also in the humanities.

Chancellor Todd Roberts sent all the graduates out into the world with an exhortation: “I hope that you will make the most of your experiences,” he told them at the recent ceremony. “I hope that each of you will explore not only with an eye for what is ahead, but with curiosity for the many possibilities right before you.”

The school counts among its alumni scores of entrepreneurs, educators, physicians, researchers, teachers and some famous figures, such as NASA astronaut Christina Koch — who is scheduled to fly around the moon on the Artemis II mission (she also holds the record for continuous time in space by a woman after working on the International Space Station).

Rising sophomores statewide may now apply for the residential program on either campus, or both, and/or to the NCSSM online program. The state of North Carolina and private, philanthropic donors make all the programs possible at no cost to the students and their families for tuition, room, board, or books.
