RDU to begin terminal construction as part of $2.5B expansion

Travelers using Raleigh-Durham International Airport will begin seeing construction impacts in Terminal 2 starting in early January 2026 as part of the airport’s long-term expansion plans.

According to the airport, crews will install a temporary floor-to-ceiling wall at the north end of Terminal 2, closing off the area for approximately two years while work is underway. The project includes expanding ticketing and international arrivals areas, adding security checkpoint lanes, and upgrading the baggage handling system.

“If you are traveling through RDU in the new year, you may see and hear construction work in Terminal 2, but all ticket counters and security checkpoint lanes will remain open,” explains the airport’s website. “RDU’s guest experience team will be in the terminal if you have questions or need any assistance.”

Construction is underway to expand Terminal 2 landside areas from the curbside to the security checkpoint, with the goal of creating a “modern, functional, and sustainable space” that accommodates continued growth.

“By expanding Terminal 2, we aim to reduce your wait time at the ticket counter, at the security checkpoint, and at baggage claim,” reads a statement from the airport. “We’re also adding space for international arrivals as we offer more nonstop destinations than ever before.”

Travelers are encouraged to plan ahead and keep construction in mind when visiting the airport.

The Terminal 2 project is expected to be completed in 2032 and is part of RDU’s $2.5 billion Transform RDU capital improvement program.
