Board of Education discusses questionable books

The Southern Pines Elementary Media Center will honor the late Bruce Cunningham. Approval for naming the school’s department the “Bruce Cunningham Media Center” came at the December 9 meeting of the Moore County Board of Education.

A request to name the center for Cunningham, originally made by Jen Ray, a community member, met the standard for board consideration under Policy 7550, “Naming Facilities.”

An attorney who moved to Moore County after graduating from the University of Virginia School of Law, Cunningham died while vacationing with his family in Ireland this past summer. He was 71.

A member of the Moore County Board of Education since 2004, he was elected to what would be his last term in 2016.

Cunningham was known as a devoted husband and father, and a passionate advocate for students, Southern Pines and Moore County. In 2018, the Moore County Community Foundation named him its Man of the Year. In 2017, the Kiwanis Club of Sandhills presented him with its Builders Cup award.

The Sunrise Theater held a celebration of Cunningham’s life, “Bruce on Board,” in July.
