Two arrested after child is in critical condition

According to a press release by Moore County Sheriff Ronnie Fields, there have been two arrests made in the Cameron area after an investigation.

On June 15, Moore County Sheriff’s deputies responded with Moore County EMS to a report of a possible overdose of a 2-year-old child at a residence in Cameron, said Fields. The child sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to UNC-Chapel Hill Hospital for treatment.

Sheriff’s investigators subsequently executed a search warrant at the residence, where they recovered approximately 6 grams of suspected fentanyl and a small amount of marijuana.

On June 20, after confirming the nature of the child’s injuries through medical personnel, sheriff’s investigators arrested Joey Palmer, 35, and Kacey Holt, 32, both of Cameron, said Fields.

Palmer and Holt were charged with one count each of felony trafficking in opium, felony maintaining a dwelling place for controlled substance, felony child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Palmer and Holt were each committed to the Moore County Detention Center under a $1,500,000 secured bond pending a first court appearance in Moore County district court on June 28.

The child is currently in stable but critical condition.

Defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
