One in custody after burning belongings threaten neighboring home

A person was taken into custody Wednesday morning after burning clothes and personal belongings in a driveway sparked a grass fire that threatened vehicles and a neighboring home in the Crain’s Creek area.

According to the Crain’s Creek Fire Department, fire units were dispatched at 11:11 a.m. at the request of the Moore County Sheriff’s Department, which was already on scene. The response was upgraded to a structure fire after dispatchers determined the flames were too close to a building.

Firefighters arrived to find an active grass fire endangering multiple vehicles and a neighboring home, where exterior siding had begun to melt from the heat. Crews quickly brought the fire under control, preventing damage to the vehicles and limiting structural damage to the home’s siding, according to the department.

The fire was attributed to an individual allegedly burning clothing and belongings in a driveway, which spread beyond control. The individual was taken into custody by the Moore County Sheriff’s Department. No additional details about charges were released.
