A phone scam is currently going around Moore County in which callers pretend to be law enforcement officers demanding money.

The sheriff’s office said on Sunday Moore County residents are receiving calls from scammers insisting money is needed to clear up warrants, get someone off the hook for missing jury duty or other court and sheriff’s office business.

The victims are told money must be loaded on some sort of prepaid card and the number sent to them to clear the issue.

Sheriff Neil Godfrey stated “These calls are not coming from the Moore County Sheriff’s Office or any valid agency. These are all scams trying to get money from people. The sheriff’s office will never call you demanding money for any reason.”

The government including the IRS or police departments including the Moore County Sheriff’s Office does not call citizens demanding money in lieu of being arrested.

If residents receive such a call, the sheriff’s department said never date of birth, account information, or any other personal information over the phone to people you do not know.

In addition, no legitimate agency or business will ask you to wire money, send pay cards of any type them.

If you are in doubt at all whether this is a scam or not, find contact information for the company or agency calling you, not the one provided by the person demanding money or payment.

One way to do this is to ask for the caller’s agency or company name, find a number for customer service independently, and call to make sure the request was legitimate.
