Southern Pines temporarily changing disinfectant improve water safety

A public hearing was held regarding a two-phased development within the Southern Pines Corporate Park. The hearing was part of the Southern Pines Town Council’s virtual business meeting, which happened Tuesday, May 12.

The council approved the plan following an in-depth presentation by both town staff and advocates for the project. That approval can be finalized at the council’s May 26 work session.

At the top of the proceeding, council members heard from Suzy Russell, planner for Southern Pines, who detailed findings regarding the status of the request. Drawings relative to the proposal were part of Russell’s presentation.

The first phase of the development would involve construction of an office for LKC Engineering, while the second phase would see the building of a fitness and recreation facility.

Formed in 2012, LKC Engineering has a listed address on Aqua Shed Court in Aberdeen. The Southern Pines location would be home to the firm’s new office.

The Southern Pines Corporate Park, consisting of more than 100 acres,  is zoned for light industrial use. Other possibilities are office buildings and clean manufacturing. Companies qualifying to locate in the park can apply for state tax credits.

Southern Pines Corporate Park, as promoted, offers easy access to U.S. Highway 1 via Yadkin Road or Air Tool Drive. The park is four miles from Moore County Airport. There are currently five lots.

Attorney Nick Robinson, following a comprehensive discussion, requested the council approve the phased development. No attorney representing the opposition was present at the meeting.

“That was a very professional presentation, very thorough presentation,” Mayor Carol Haney said. “We appreciate your investment in our community.”

A public hearing on a separate development proposal also took place during the remote meeting. Developers want to construct a medical office, Pinehurst Surgical Clinic. Bob Koontz, of Koontz Jones Design PLLC, was present, as authorized agent, for the applicant.

The office would be located in Morganton Park North.

No public opposition to the project was voiced during the hearing.

Preliminary plans for the development were approved at the close of the quasi-judicial proceeding.
