The Southern Pines Police Department has reported an increase in mail theft. Checks are being stolen from street mailboxes in all reported cases.
“This results in stolen checks being “washed,” which means the checks are being altered, forged and cashed by thieves,” said the police department on its Facebook page on Sunday.
