A storm swept through Aberdeen on Sunday evening, damaging trees, vehicles, power lines, and homes in what may have been the result of straight-line winds.
Aberdeen Fire Chief Phillip Richardson recounted to Sandhills Sentinel that he was sitting on his back porch near downtown when the wind suddenly began to pick up. Shortly afterward, the Aberdeen Fire Department was dispatched to multiple calls for downed trees, one of which was just one street over from Richardson’s home, where a large tree had been uprooted and fallen across power lines.
Crews immediately set to cleanup efforts following the sudden storm.
Additional trees were reported down on Main Street and South Street, leaving a trail of debris. Chief Richardson noted that the pattern of damage appeared to follow a straight path through town, suggesting that straight-line winds could be responsible.
Firefighters responded to several homes and were seen using chainsaws to clear fallen trees and limbs. Duke Energy crews were en route to repair downed lines and restore service.
No injuries were reported during the storm.
