The Sandhills Woman’s Exchange, 15 Azalea Road, announced another experienced craftsman as their September/October ‘Artisan Spotlight.’
Kathleen Miller has been drawing pictures as long as she can remember. Her natural talent grew through the years of working, raising a family and retirement. Today, she is considered one of the finest folk and decorative artists in the Southeast.
Born in the upstate New York village of Apalachin, Miller’s family was of Netherlands Dutch heritage. She graduated from the State University of Albany with a Business degree and met her husband on campus. She enjoyed raising two daughters with her husband of fifty years, Ira, across seven states before calling the Sandhills home for the past 20 years.
Through it all, Kathy continued to study and create art. At first, just for herself, then for friends and family. When those friends and neighbors wanted to learn how to make art themselves, Kathy decided to teach them. She has taught numerous classes, including advanced decorative art in her Southern Pines home studio and beginners’ classes at ARTworks in Vass.
Today, Kathy’s art can be found worldwide in private and commercial collections. She has been featured in the White House, The Smithsonian and displayed in the home of American folk and decorative art, The Folk Art Museum of Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
The Sandhills Woman’s Exchange Board, advisors and volunteers are proud to present Kathy Miller’s folk art work at the cabin. Her story and art are displayed and available in their gift shop upon reopening Wednesday, September 4.
The cabin is currently open Tuesdays through Saturdays for this fall season from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch is served from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Volunteers are always welcome to help serve as a waitresses, gift shop cashier or kitchen sous chef helpers. Interested volunteers and To-Go orders may be made by calling 910-295-4677.
