The athletic field at Rassie Wicker Park in Pinehurst is getting an upgrade. The grass field will be retrofitted with synthetic turf as part of a continued effort to enhance local recreational amenities. The field will close beginning Monday, Dec. 9, through March 1, 2025, weather permitting.
This project is a key component of the 2023 Master Parks and Recreation Plan, which outlined the development of synthetic turf fields in the community, announced the Village in a press release. As part of the plan, turf has already replaced one field at Cannon Park. The addition of synthetic turf at Rassie Wicker Park will provide residents and visitors with a versatile, reliable, and high-quality playing surface.
The Village said the benefits of synthetic turf are:
Versatility: Turf fields can accommodate a wide variety of sports and activities, increasing their utility for both organized leagues and casual use.
Reliability: Unlike natural grass fields, synthetic turf is not impacted by weather conditions such as rain, ensuring that the fields remain available for use year-round.
Increased Usage: Turf fields can withstand higher volumes of use, meaning more people can enjoy the fields more often without concerns of damage or field rest periods.
Accessibility: Synthetic turf provides a smoother and more stable surface, which is beneficial for individuals using wheelchairs or engaging in adaptive athletic activities, offering greater safety and comfort during play.
“We are excited to move forward with this important upgrade to our community’s recreational facilities,” said Dave White, superintendent of Pinehurst Parks and Recreation in the release.” This turf retrofit will not only enhance the overall experience for our residents and athletes but will also help us meet the growing demand for quality sports fields in the Village.”
During the closure, the Parks and Recreation Department encourages the community to visit other nearby parks and recreational facilities for outdoor activities.
