Union Pines wins first NCHSAA women’s lacrosse title

The Union Pines Vikings completed their perfect season with a 20-6 win against Bishop McGuinness in the 1A/2A/3A women’s lacrosse championship match at Durham County Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon, announced the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA).
 
The Vikings finished the year 18-0 and earned their first NCHSAA Lacrosse Championship in their championship match debut.

Union Pines scored the first three goals of the day and never trailed. Anna Gaab opened the scoring, and Addison Volitis added two more before Bishop McGuinness found the scoreboard. The Vikings led 7-2 after the first and 14-4 at halftime.
 
Janie Spicer scored three times for the Vikings and also had four assists. She was named MVP for her efforts. Ellie Powell had a game-high six goals and added a pair of assists. Gaab and Volitis finished the game with three goals apiece.
 
“The NCHSAA is committed to promoting and highlighting outstanding sportsmanship and has partnered with North Carolina Farm Bureau Insurance to recognize one athlete from each team who has displayed the ideals of sportsmanship throughout the year,” said NCHSAA in a press release. “The 2024 NC Farm Bureau Sportsmanship Award winners for the 1A/2A/3A Women’s Lacrosse Championship were Caroline Duggan from Bishop McGuinness and Janie Spicer from Union Pines.”
