Union Pines wrestling heading to state championship

The Union Pines wrestling team won the Eastern championship in the State Team Duals Tournament Wednesday night. The Vikings came into the tournament as a No. 1 seed in the 3A tournament. The Vikings will be facing Fred T. Foard in the N.C. High School Athletic Association state championship match at Greensboro Coliseum Saturday at 4 p.m. 

This week, the Vikings defeated Harnett Central in round one, 74-6. In round two, they defeated Westover, 64-18. In round three, the Vikings defeated Currituck, 42-38. In the fourth round, they defeated Orange County.

After a great season, Pinecrest fell short of the 4A state championship but took home the 4A East region runner up. They end their season, 23-1. 

The Patriots were ranked No. 1 and hosted during the tournament. They defeated East Chapel Hill in round one. In round two, they defeated Wakefield. In round three, the Patriots defeated Newborn, 51-19. In round four, they lost, 40-21, against Laney.
