The Union Pines wrestling teams returned to the mat with a bang on Wednesday night.
The highly successful boys team beat East Wake at home in a dual 81-0 and swept the four JV contested matches, said Union Pines Wrestling Coach Brian Gray in a press release.
The boys will be at home on Saturday for the Viking Invitational.
The girls team started the season going to Asheboro for a tri-meet with South Davidson, said Gray. They first beat Asheboro by a score of 54-18, followed by a 36-36 win via tiebreaking criteria against South Davidson.
Dual meet wins were rare last year in the first year of NCHSAA-sanctioned womens wrestling in N.C. due to not having enough wrestlers to cover the 12 weight classes.
Gray said the team has grown, with a good group of freshmen joining the team. Three freshmen won by a pair of pins on Thursday, MacKenzie Shaver, Isla Flechsenhaar, and Leila Flechsenaar.
On Friday, the girls will host the Viking Women’s Invitational at Crain’s Creek Middle School.
