Crash near STARS sends woman, child to hospital

A woman and child were hospitalized Tuesday morning following a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 1 South near Southern Dunes Drive, according to the Cypress Pointe Fire Department.

Emergency crews were dispatched shortly after 7:30 a.m. to the scene near STARS Charter School. Fire officials said Engine 211 arrived to find both vehicles still in the roadway with moderate damage.

Cypress Pointe Fire Department said that no occupants were trapped within the vehicles.

An SUV carrying two occupants, an adult female and a child, sustained the brunt of the impact. The woman suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, and the child reported neck pain. Both were transported to the hospital by Moore County EMS. A firefighter drove the ambulance so both paramedics could provide care during the transport.

The second vehicle, a van, was occupied by one person who was not injured and declined medical treatment.

The woman was later transferred from the local hospital to a trauma center for additional evaluation and treatment.

The incident is under investigation and no further details regarding the cause have been released.

Responding units included Cypress Pointe Fire/Rescue, Moore County EMS, the Moore County Sheriff’s Office, and the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
