Authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting that left a suspect dead late Saturday night in Cameron after a man allegedly fired at passing vehicles and then at a responding deputy.
Authorities on scene said the incident began when the driver of a Chevrolet Camaro was traveling east toward U.S. Highway 1. As the vehicle crossed the railroad tracks near J’s Cash Mart, a man reportedly armed with a rifle fired at the car and struck it at least once.
The driver called 911 and reported that someone was shooting at cars along Carthage Street, a stretch of North Carolina Highway 24/27.
Deputies with the Moore County Sheriff’s Office responded to the area to locate the suspect.
When the first deputy arrived and confronted the suspect, the suspect fired shots at the deputy. The deputy returned fire, reportedly fatally wounding the suspect.
The deputy involved in the shooting was not injured and was identified as Jed Carraway. Carraway is a retired U.S. Army veteran and has been employed with the Moore County Sheriff’s Office since June 2024.
The investigation has been turned over to the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings.
The roadway is expected to remain closed for several hours while investigators process the scene. Bullet casings were visible in the roadway as law enforcement conducted their investigation.
On Monday, Harvey Franklin Hardy, 52, of Cameron, was identified as the suspect by the Moore County Sheriff’s Office.
