Moore County businessman Ioannis “Yianni” Panagiotis Kakouras, 37, of Carthage, was arrested Tuesday on felony and misdemeanor state tax charges filed by the North Carolina Department of Revenue. He was charged with three counts of embezzlement of state property and five counts of willful failure to file return, supply information, or pay tax.
An indictment alleges that Kakouras, president and the responsible person of Euros, Inc., doing business as Mac’s Breakfast Anytime, aided and abetted the corporation to embezzle, misapply, and convert to its own use $108,874.39 in North Carolina sales taxes from Jan. 1, 2023, to Dec. 31, 2025.
“During this time, Kakouras was the responsible person of the corporation, which was under a duty to collect, hold in trust, and remit North Carolina sales taxes to the North Carolina Department of Revenue,” said the North Carolina Department of Revenue in a press release. “Additional indictments allege Kakouras willfully failed to file a North Carolina Corporation Income Tax Return for tax years 2023 and 2024 for the restaurant business and willfully failed to file a North Carolina Individual Income Tax Return for tax years 2022, 2023, and 2024.”
The business, Mac’s Breakfast Anytime, is located in Aberdeen.
Kakouras appeared before a Wake County magistrate and was placed under a $100,000 unsecured bond. A first appearance is scheduled for July 27 in Wake County Superior Court in Raleigh.
The charges against Kakouras resulted from an investigation by special agents with the Department’s Criminal Investigations Division in Raleigh.
Defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
