The Moore County Sheriff’s Office has identified the Cameron man who was fatally shot by a deputy Saturday night.
According to a press release, deputies were dispatched around 10:42 p.m. March 21 to the 200 block of Carthage Street after a motorist reported that a person walking along the roadway had fired a gun and struck their vehicle. The driver was uninjured and able to provide a description of the suspect.
According to the sheriff’s office, a deputy arrived within about two minutes and located an armed individual matching the description in the 400 block of Carthage Street.
The individual, later identified as Harvey Franklin Hardy, 52, of Cameron, reportedly fled on foot and ran around a nearby building while the deputy pursued him, authorities said.
The press release explains that Hardy reportedly fired his weapon during the pursuit. The deputy returned fire, and Hardy was pronounced dead at the scene.
The deputy was not injured and was identified as Jed Carraway. Carraway is a retired U.S. Army veteran and has been employed with the Moore County Sheriff’s Office since June 2024.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation responded to the scene and is conducting an independent investigation into the officer-involved shooting, which authorities said is standard procedure.
The circumstances leading up to the incident remain under investigation.
