A Southern Pines man was arrested Friday and charged with carrying a concealed firearm.  Twenty-one year old Trevon Jamal Monroe was arrested after Southern Pines Police pulled over a vehicle he was riding in for a traffic violation on North Carlisle Street.

As the officers approached the car, marijuana smoke was detected. Upon further investigation, the police found a loaded .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol in Monroe’s possession, according to a news release from the Southern Pines Police Department.

“The Southern Pines Police Department will be working with our Federal law enforcement partners, specifically the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms, to conduct a history trace on the recovered firearm to determine if additional charges need to be filed against Trevon Jamal Monroe,” said Southern Pines Police Captain Charles Campbell.

Monroe was previously arrested in September following ‘a discharged of a firearm incident’ and charged with possession of a weapon of a mass destruction and transporting a weapon of mass destruction.

The weapon recovered during that incident was ‘an assault style rifle which had been illegally altered by cutting the barrel down to an illegal length.’  Monroe’s bond was set at $100,000 and charges are still pending.

Monroe was jailed for Friday’s arrest under a $75,000 bond and has a November 13 court date.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
