Aberdeen man charged in copper theft case


The Aberdeen Police Department arrested a local man Oct. 25 after officers said he was reportedly caught stealing copper wire and piping from a business on U.S. Highway 5 near Saunders Avenue.

Police identified the suspect as James Dupree, 41, of Aberdeen.

Officers responded to the scene on October 25 and allegedly found Dupree nearby with a large container filled with copper wires and piping, along with a backpack full of additional wires. He was detained while officers spoke with witnesses and reviewed photos provided during the investigation.

According to police, Dupree had reportedly cut, removed, and stolen approximately $4,000 worth of copper wire, piping, and tools. He is facing charges of felony injure property for obtaining nonferrous metals, felony larceny, and felony possession of stolen goods.

Dupree was taken before a Moore County magistrate, where he was given no bond as a condition of pretrial release.

All suspects and persons charged with a crime are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
