Since June 2012, American Guns & Ammo has been a trusted name in Southern Pines for firearms, ammunition, and self-defense within Moore County. Though the store may have recently changed locations, the quality and care that owners Robert and Marianne Terry put into the shop has not changed in the slightest.
The Terrys, who moved to Southern Pines from Raleigh 21 years ago, are well-rooted in the community—as is their shop.
American Guns & Ammo opened its doors in 2012 and was initially located on Commerce Avenue near Walmart. They were there for several years before moving to their previous location off of U.S. 1.
Luckily, during the most recent move last September, the store didn’t have far to go. After leaving their previous location off of U.S. 1 in Southern Pines, the shop simply moved into the neighboring shopping plaza. It’s now situated behind the new Sheetz and next door to Clean Eatz.
Enduring three different locations hasn’t deterred the Terrys, who opened the shop as a passion project.
“We opened our business back in June of 2012,” recalled Marianne. “It was Robert’s idea. It was something he had wanted to do for a long time.”
Robert, a retired UPS employee and avid gun collector, saw an opportunity to turn his longtime hobby into a business, and with Marianne by his side, they’ve created a welcoming environment for customers.
“The one thing that customers have always said is that they like that it’s a family-owned business and that everyone is greeted when they walk in the door,” Marianne explained. “They also like that we carry something for everyone.”
The store stocks a wide range of firearms and ammunition, including Defender Ammunition Company, a local veteran-owned brand. American Guns & Ammo additionally offers blue-label programs for military and law enforcement in an effort to support those who serve. A concealed carry class and personal training services are also offered.
Though locally loved, the Terrys have found that their store generates interest far beyond Moore County. American Guns & Ammo has served several notable visitors, including a Pittsburgh Steelers player, representatives of previous presidential candidates, and members of former President Donald Trump’s security team, the latter which made not one but two visits and presented the Terrys with a commemorative coin for their excellent quality of service.
When asked what their favorite part of the business has been so far, though, the Terrys had a more sentimental answer than expected.
“I would say the best part is that we get to work together,” said Marianne, smiling. She then added, “I do love customers coming in every day, getting to know people, and chatting, too.”
Robert mirrored this sentiment. “The best part is having my wife as a boss,” he joked. He also noted that in addition to working alongside Marianne, he values the community’s support.
