Bicyclist dies after being hit by van on U.S. 1

An Aberdeen man is dead after being struck by a car while crossing U.S. 1 on his bicycle Saturday night. The incident occurred near the intersection of Maple Ave. by Aberdeen Lake around 7:30 p.m.

According to officials, the driver of the van was heading south on U.S. 1 when the bicyclist attempted to cross the highway into the van’s path. EMS initiated lifesaving measures, but the man succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. After next of kin was notified, police identified the man as 63-year-old Larry Cameron.

All lanes of U.S. 1 were completely shut down and remained so while the wreck was investigated. Sargeant Kirsten Czako, a traffic accident reconstruction specialist with Aberdeen Police, responded to the scene and was part of the team investigating the wreck.

Responding to the scene were Aberdeen Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS, and the Aberdeen Police Department.
