On Sept. 10, the town of Cameron reconvened a recessed meeting from Oct. 26, 2023, and voted to raise the minimum lot size in the extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ) to six acres, announced Mayor Pro Tempore Frutchey in a town newsletter. This is referred to as RA-6 zoning.

An earlier unanimous vote in favor of this change by the Zoning and Planning Board initiated the need for a public hearing so the Board of Commissioners could hear from the public on this issue and make an informed decision.

At the Sept. 10 meeting, community members voiced their support for the rezoning; none were in opposition, said Frutchey. There was a unanimous vote by the Board of Commissioners to increase the minimum lot size.

Almost two years of discussion during various public town meetings regarding this matter culminated in the final community forum and vote. This change stipulates that an individual or contractor cannot build a home on less than six acres in the ETJ.

Exceptions exist for those who are interested in family subdivisions. Frutchey said that few restrictions were made to allow landowners to subdivide among families. This was a concern voiced by the community and was accounted for in the ordinance.

The change to RA-6 is designed to limit high-density subdivisions to maintain the rural, agrarian nature of the community, said Frutchey. It will aid in setting the stage for sustainable growth and preserving Cameron’s current standard of living, added Frutchey.

For anyone interested in learning more, copies of the ordinance can be obtained from the town clerk upon request.
