An accident in Aberdeen sent a car into a pond in front of Bethesda Presbyterian Church Sunday afternoon.

The accident occurred at 4:45 p.m. on U.S. Highway 1 when two Honda sedans collided.

Luckily, the driver of the car was able to get the door open and get out before the car went into the lake.

When emergency crews arrived moments later, the car was submerged with only a small section of the top showing.

Neither driver was seriously injured in the accident.

In order to remove the sedan from the pond, members of Aberdeen Fire Department donned life vests and safety helmets and went into the water.

They attached a harness to the vehicle, so that Rockwell Towing could winch the car from the pond.

One lane of U.S.1 northbound was shut down while crews worked.

Responding to the scene were Aberdeen Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS, Aberdeen Police Department, and Rockwell Towing.

Sandhills Sentinel reported on another car careening into the same pond in November 2017.

Witnesses said a Ford Escape ran the stop sign coming out of Forest Hills neighborhood, crossed over U.S.1 and crashed into the water. The driver was uninjured.
