Driver in police custody after flipping truck in Carthage

A man was taken into custody on the scene of a serious crash near Carthage town limits Wednesday evening. The single-vehicle crash happened just before 6 p.m. on N.C. Highway 24-27 at the town limits just west of Frank’s Food Center.

According to officials on scene, the driver of the Chevrolet Colorado was traveling west out of Carthage when he told authorities that he allegedly swerved to miss another car. This caused him to lose control and run off the opposite side of the road before clipping a road sign and diving down into a deep culvert. The truck then went airborne and flipped end over end, finally coming to a stop on its roof.

The roof of the truck was almost completely smashed, but the driver was able to crawl out. When authorities first arrived on the scene, the man reportedly fled into a wooded area but returned to the location of the crash shortly after.

He was not seriously injured and refused medical treatment at the scene.

Authorities took 40-year-old Lucas McLaughlin, of Cameron, into custody on suspicion of driving while impaired and resisting a public officer.

One lane of N.C. 24-27 was shut down while crews worked the scene and the vehicle was removed, which caused traffic delays for motorists on an already busy highway.

Responding units were the Carthage Fire Department, Moore County EMS, Moore County Sheriff’s Office, and the Carthage Police Department.
