Emergency crews responded to a single-vehicle crash on Indiana Avenue near Strathmore Drive in Southern Pines on Saturday, around 4 p.m.
Upon arrival, the first units on the scene reported the car was on fire and had struck a power pole. Witnesses reported the driver had left on foot. It appears there were no other occupants in the vehicle.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, and personnel from Duke Power arrived to assess the damage to the pole and make repairs. At the time of this report, the driver had not been located.
Indiana Avenue was completely shut down and traffic rerouted.
The N.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the cause of the accident.
Responding to the scene were units from Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, Aberdeen Fire & Rescue, Moore County EMS, Moore County Sheriff’s Department, and the N.C. Highway Patrol.
