Dump truck takes out power lines in Carthage

A dump truck arriving at Speer Concrete in Carthage delivered a little more than expected Wednesday evening. The accident happened at the business located at 4221 U.S. 15-501 just before 5:30 p.m.

After arriving, the driver raised the truck bed to deliver a load but did not realize he was close to power lines. As he pulled in, the bed caught the overhead power lines, pulling on them and causing the nearby pole to break in half, leaving it lying down and lines across the business’ driveway.

Carthage Fire Department was dispatched along with Carthage Police to the scene. Shortly after arriving on the scene, they were dispatched to a small brush fire nearby that had been sparked by one of the downed power lines. A brush truck responded and quickly put out the fire.

Duke Energy was dispatched to Speer Concrete. Sandhills Sentinel spoke with a representative who said Mastec was being contacted to replace the power pole, and an estimated restoral time for power was not immediately available. They did advise that the outage should be minimal in the area, and Sandhills Sentinel was able to witness all area businesses still had power.

The evening commute was slowed down in the area due to emergency vehicles on the scene, but traffic could proceed in both directions.

There were no injuries reported with this accident.
