Firefighters contain blaze in multi-unit complex

Two condos suffered extensive damage in a fire in Southern Pines Saturday morning. The fire occurred in the 100 block of Shibui Gardens just after 10 a.m.

A resident noticed smoke coming from the roof area of his neighbor’s unit and called 911. All the occupants of the multi-unit structure were safely outside when the first fire units arrived on the scene.

Upon arrival, there was smoke coming from the eaves of the residence. Multiple crews were dispatched due to the danger of the fire spreading to other units in the complex.

The fire was located in the attic area and had spread to the adjoining unit. Firefighters had to open up the ceilings of both units to attack the flames that were spreading. Other crews attacked the blaze from the roof. After a short period of time, the fire was brought under control.

Southern Pines Fire Chief Mike Cameron estimated the damage to both residences at $100,000. It is unknown at this time what caused the fire. The Southern Pines Fire Marshal is investigating.

The Red Cross of Moore County is assisting the families.

Responding to the scene were Southern Pines Fire & Rescue, Aberdeen Fire & Rescue, Pinehurst Fire & Rescue, and Southern Pines Police Department.
