On Oct. 17 at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., follow the yellow brick road to Pinecrest High School’s Robert E. Lee Auditorium and step inside a world where film and symphony become one as The Carolina Philharmonic opens its 18th Concert Season with a multimedia presentation of The Wizard of Oz. Under the masterful baton of Maestro David Michael Wolff, the orchestra will play the iconic score as the movie delights on a large screen.
The Wizard of Oz was first introduced to the world in movie theaters in 1939. Due in part to an astronomic budget and an extremely competitive award season, The Wizard of Oz was underwhelming in terms of box office performance and critical recognition. Of the five categories it was nominated for, the only Oscars that the Oz team walked away with were Best Original Song (“Somewhere Over the Rainbow”) and Best Original Score.
The real star-making turn of The Wizard of Oz came not from its grand Technicolor release on the big screen, but from a black-and-white broadcast on television on Nov. 3, 1956. The Wizard of Oz sparkled without any bright colors to appreciate Wicked Witch Margaret Hamilton with her jade green face or the yellow brick road. With everything else faded away, the world was able to fall in love with a little girl singing about a world that could understand her.
